Parcel & Last Mile

Market situation

The European parcel market accounts for about 60% of the 180 billion Euro European Last Mile Delivery market which is expected to grow at 9%. The Parcel volume is projected to grow from 4 billion to 6 billion by 2030. The main change over the past decade was Amazon establishing their own full scale fulfillment, sorting and delivery network. In the coming decade additional developments likely gain importance: First new entrants, from Asia setting up their warehouses and last mile networks in Europe. Second new logistics solutions for AI search induced commerce. Third, continued growth of B2B eCommerce (with 2.5 Euros trillion already more than double the size of B2C eCommerce). Fourth an increase of Pick-up solutions and last mile automation.

Expectations

While customers got accustomed to same day and next day deliveries (40% of volume), they are now expecting more convenient delivery options with fast delivery, flexible scheduled deliveries and Pick-up options (parcel locker installations growing at 30% annually). Also sustainability is progressing with more sustainable packaging options and further electrification of last mile delivery.

For B2B eCommerce, the focus is on streamlined, digitized processes that support more integrated supply chains — enabling outsourcing of tasks to reduce handling and cost while delivering faster service.

Implications for logistics

Continued last mile and out of home Pick-up and Drop-off automation
Further decentralisation of delivery networks with more flexible direct, regional and urban sorting capabilities and new service offerings
Increased demand for more convenient delivery options like fast and flexibly scheduled delivery, buffering & consolation of shipments and out-of home Pick-up and Drop-off.
Possibly new logistics solutions for fast growing social media and AI shopping, ranging from fast fulfillment over flexible consolidation, buffering & sorting, to fast delivery or 24/7 Pick-up and Drop-off.
Flexibility to handle sustainable packaging and delivery options, ranging from continued variety and changes to more sustainable packaging, returns handling and recycling.
New last mile solutions for a more agile and tech driven B2B replenishment
